Can a power station run a window air conditioner?

Short answer

Yes, but not for long. A 10,000 BTU window AC draws roughly 900 W while the compressor runs and needs about 2,200 W to start. A 1,000 Wh power station can run it for about 1 to 2 hours. Even a 3,600 Wh unit lasts only around 3.5 to 7 hours, so for all-day cooling a generator or solar setup is more realistic.

Why air conditioning drains a battery so fast

Moving heat out of a room takes a lot of energy. A 10,000 BTU unit typically uses 800 to 1,000 W while the compressor runs, which is several times more than a refrigerator. And on a hot day, the compressor rarely rests.

Runtime by power station size

The columns assume the compressor runs 50%, 70% or 100% of the time, depending on heat and insulation, with 85% usable battery energy.

How to get more cooling from a battery

  • Go smaller. A 5,000 or 6,000 BTU unit draws about 450 to 550 W and doubles the runtime, enough to cool a single bedroom.
  • Choose an inverter AC. Inverter window units ramp the compressor up and down instead of switching on and off. They start gently and often use 30 to 50% less energy.
  • Cool one room, not the house. Close the door and cover windows with blinds or blackout curtains during the day.
  • Run it before bed. Bring the bedroom temperature down in the evening, then switch to a fan overnight.

Fans stretch a battery for days

A box fan uses about 60 W, and small DC fans use 5 to 20 W. A 1,000 Wh power station can run a box fan for about 14 hours, or a small DC fan for days. For many outages that is the most practical way to stay comfortable.

Extreme heat is dangerous. If an outage coincides with a heat wave and you or someone at home is older, very young, or has a health condition, find out where your local cooling centers are before you need one.

Frequently asked questions

What size power station do I need to run a window AC?

For a 10,000 BTU unit, choose at least 1,800 W continuous and 2,500 W surge output. For more than a couple of hours of runtime, you need 2,000 Wh or more, or solar charging.

Can solar panels run a window AC during the day?

With enough panels, yes. Running a 900 W AC directly needs roughly 1,200 W or more of solar panels in full sun, which is a large setup for a portable system.

How many watts does a 5,000 BTU window AC use?

Most 5,000 BTU window units draw about 450 to 500 W while running.

I started OutageReady to answer the practical questions most people have when they look into backup power: what will a power station or generator actually run, and for how long? I am not an electrician, so the site sticks to clear math and published appliance ratings, and points you to a licensed professional for anything involving your home's wiring. As I test equipment myself, I will publish the measurements here.
